The Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County invites interested prospective and enrolled law school students and other undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning about the court system to apply to participate in the Court's 2022 Summer Extern Program. Depending on the judge, externships can be virtual, in-person, or a combination of virtual and in-person. All externs will need to complete a background check. In-person externs will need to comply with all Court health and safety protocols in place during the externship (e.g., physical distancing; masks; etc.). All programming will be offered both in-person and on-line (using Microsoft Teams / Court Connect), including brown bag lunch trainings, court hearings, and debriefs with judges.

How to Apply
A list of participating judges will be available on March 1, 2022. Interested prospective or enrolled law school students and undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning about the court system can apply by completing the 2022 Extern Application and uploading a copy of a current resume.
An externship with the Superior Court is an unpaid educational opportunity that provides the extern training similar to that which would be given in an educational environment. An externship is conducted without entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the externship. The primary purpose of the Summer Extern Program is to provide each extern with exposure to and an understanding of Court operations.
The Summer Extern Program is coordinated by the Court's Externship Committee: Judges Robert Brooks, Marvin Davis, Ronda Fisk, and Frank Moskowitz and Commissioner Jacki Ireland.

- Each extern will be paired with one or more “host” judicial officers. The extern and their paired judicial officer(s) will determine the dates for and length of the externship. Formal court-wide programming will be offered from June 6 - July 18, 2022.
- Each week the formal programming will feature a different Court department, with an introductory "brown bag" presentation, followed by highlighted court observation opportunities, and occasional follow-up Q&A sessions with the judicial officers holding the hearings.
- Externs will have the opportunity to work with and receive feedback from judicial officer(s) on various written research projects, as determined by the judicial officer. The extern's assigned judicial officer(s) may also identify additional observation opportunities.
- The program will be hosted using Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Teams, and Sharepoint. These technology platforms will facilitate each extern's communication with their assigned judicial officer(s) and participation in the online educational programs and observation opportunities.
